about

This is a song about a heist gone awry. A man finds himself on the run from a vengeful gun-wielding maniac that he's double crossed. This song was inspired by a trip to the Oregon coast where a vagabond kept invading our campsite. We repeatedly cast him back out into the thick fog as his behavior got stranger and stranger, but he kept lurking just beyond our field of vision, only to reappear time after time in increasingly bizarre ways.

lyrics

The wind blew the waves as we walked down the beach
Moon pulled the tide away
I know they ain't deep, but those tide pools they keep, all the memories and thoughts of the day
A pistol wielding mad man with taste for revenge, set off on his horse late at night
I'll never understand why we ever made the plans, but now we have to move as fast as we can

Last dance with the enemy, last dance with the enemy
Last dance with the enemy

With the money by my side I crept into a den of briars and thought to pray to the ghosts in the fog
He shouted in the wind as the fog got so dense, that he couldn't see the torch in his hand

Last dance with the enemy, last dance with the enemy, last dance with the enemy
Last dance with the enemy, last dance with the enemy, last dance with the enemy

Thought all my life I was a captive
To the belly-aching poor and a rollout bed
Surrendered all I had just to make a hasty grab and now the money's here as sure as I am dead

Creeped out and focused and sure that he'd moved on, Chanced all my luck one last time
Crazy how it ends with the still and silent wind, giving way against a pistol crack a dawn

Last dance with the enemy, last dance with the enemy, last dance with the enemy
Last dance with the enemy, last dance with the enemy, last dance with the enemy

I know they ain't deep, but those tide pools they keep, all the memories and thoughts of the day
